        Each 5 ml of PHENCODIN contains ;
        Codeine Phosphate I.P. .....10 mg
Chlorpheniramine Maleate I.P. ....4 mg
Alcohol I.P. 0.15 ml (in pleasantly flavored mentholated syrup base)
        Therapeutic Indications & Usage
  • Dry cough
  • Smoker’s cough
  • Allergic cough
  • Post-operative cough
        Respiratory depression, obstructive airway disease, asthma. Acute alcoholism, convulsive disorders, head injuries, comatose patients, raised intracranial pressure. Pregnancy (prolonged use or high doses at term). Special Precautions Hypothyroidism, adrenocortical insufficiency; asthma, impaired hepatic or renal function, prostatic hyperplasia, hypotension, shock, inflammatory or obstructive bowel disorders, myasthenia gravis.
        Infants, neonates; Reduce dose in elderly or debilitated patients. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Lactation.

        Pregnancy Category (US FDA)
        Category C: Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus.
        Category D: There is positive evidence of human foetal risk, but the benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk (e.g., if the drug is needed in a life-threatening situation or for a serious disease for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective
        Adverse Reactions
        Adverse Drug Reactions Dependence, withdrawal symptoms; nausea, vomiting, constipation; drowsiness, confusion; difficulty in micturition, ureteric or biliary spasms, urinary retention; dry mouth, dizziness, sweating, facial flushing, headache, vertigo, bradycardia, tachycardia, palpitations, orthostatic hypotension, hypothermia, restlessness, mood changes, decreased libido or potency, hallucination, miosis; raised intracranial pressure, muscle rigidity.
        Drug Interactions
        Drug Interactions Enhanced depressant effects with alcohol, anaesthetics, anxiolytics, hypnotics, TCAs, antipsychotics. Possible CNS depression or excitation with MAOIs. May alter effects of other compounds e.g. cyclizine, mexiletine, cisapride, metoclopramide and domperidone.
        Recommended Dosage & Administration
        Adult ;
        15-30 mg 3-4 times/day. Max: 240 mg/day.
        Children ;
        as directed by physician
